Who is a mentor for mediators?

An experienced professional in the field of mediation who provides support, training and guidance to less experienced mediators (mentees) for their professional development. Such a mentor has profound knowledge and practical experience in mediation and is able to effectively share this knowledge with his/her mentees.

Mentoring (case management with a novice mediator) and feedback for a mediator can be provided in the form of in-person and online work.

The main tasks of a mentor

Sharing knowledge and experience
  • Familiarizing the mentee with mediation techniques and methods.

  • Discussion of real cases and practical situations to illustrate effective approaches.

Support and motivation
  • Providing moral and emotional support in stressful situations.

  • Encouragement for continuous improvement and self-development.

Development of professional skills
  • Teaching to organize and conduct mediation at all stages.

  • Assistance in identifying and analyzing mistakes, providing recommendations for their correction.

Career guidance
  • Recommendations regarding career development in mediation.​

  • Assistance in establishing professional contacts and network.

Feedback
  • Regular assessment of the mentee's development.

  • Development of individual recommendations to improve professional performance.

Ethical mentoring
  • Demonstration of high standards of ethics and professionalism.

  • Ensuring the confidentiality of information discussed during mentorship.

Development of independence
  • Assistance in developing confidence in professional abilities.

  • Encouragement of independent decision-making and responsibility for one's work.

Mandatory training as required by the Law of Ukraine “On Mediation”

  • Training in basic mediator skills according to legal requirements.

Specialization in family mediation

  • 48 hours of training in family mediation.

  • 75% of the training time is practical work (according to the Principles of Training in Basic Family Mediator Skills of the Association of Family Mediators of Ukraine).

Confirmation of qualification

  • Mentors have certificates confirming their qualification and experience.
