Conflict Management

A Handbook for leaders and consultants

The book by Friedrich Glasl

In times of great changes in an enterprise, tensions, differences and disagreements arise. Therefore, leaders and managers need profound knowledge and skills in conflict management. Friedrich Glasl's book describes a scientifically based model of conflict diagnosis and management that has consistently proven its effectiveness in practice. There is no doubt that this is one of the best books on the subject.

The book is dedicated to conflicts in organizations and has a twofold purpose: first, to help recognize and understand conflict, and second, to provide practical and theoretical means of constructive resolution of social conflicts.

The book is targeted primarily at professional mentors and counselors, as well as lawyers, leaders, politicians, and others whose profession involves working in the context of tense relationships, conflicts, and misunderstandings. Since these things are part of the everyday business process, readers of the book will learn how to deal with conflicts constructively and with competence.

528 pages (tenth edition, improved) was translated and published in 2020 in Ukraine with the consent of the author thanks to Tetiana Bilyk, Head of ITC “Mediation School”.

The Guide to Reflective Practice in Conflict Resolution

By Michael Lang

Michael Lang’s book, "THE GUIDE TO REFLECTIVE PRACTICE IN CONFLICT RESOLUTION", is a practical manual that illuminates the thought processes driving our actions — the underlying rationale for practical decisions — rather than simply describing "what to do".

The author explores the application of theory and research to practical decision-making based on the principles of Reflective Practice. This approach helps the reader better understand why we make specific decisions in our work.

In this book, Michael Lang offers a broad perspective on theories, defining them as a vast collection of beliefs, principles, biases, models, doctrines, philosophies, and standards that shape our perception of the world and influence our decision-making. These accumulated core beliefs and the "system of theories" — comprising core values, applied theories, practice models, personal styles, behavioral norms, professional experience, and contextual factors — shape how we assess specific situations and determine our subsequent actions. As such, these theories explain phenomena and provide meaning to events, structures, patterns, and behaviors.

The author examines his work within the context of mediation and conflict resolution. His central thesis is that "reflective practice is a vehicle for thoughtful and introspective analysis of professional actions, followed by learning through self-assessment to improve our abilities and skills," relying less on "instruction and advice" and more on "self-discovery".

Child-Inclusive Family Mediation

By Lisa Parkinson

Lisa Parkinson's book, "Child-Inclusive Family Mediation", will help judges, lawyers, social workers, and other professionals working in child protection recognize the potential for peacefully resolving family conflicts through mediation while prioritizing children's interests. This book traces the slow historical evolution of our understanding that children need to be seen and heard. It summarizes the research and legal context surrounding this development and explains the current state of affairs. It offers invaluable advice on how to effectively involve children in the mediation process. Lisa shares her unparalleled wisdom and experience in this area, discussing children's resilience, and includes moving accounts from children themselves about their experiences and their desire to be heard.

The aim of this book is to help mediators and family lawyers better understand the importance and significant benefits of involving children in mediation. It is written by one of the most respected and globally recognized family mediators. Lisa Parkinson's work and dedication have formed the foundation for the development of the mediation system in the UK. We are all immensely grateful to Lisa for her tireless efforts to demonstrate that there is a better, more inclusive path than litigation, and that family court proceedings, with all their destructive potential, should be an absolute last resort for resolving disputes.
